Curious if any one has any photos of Lawrence they want to share.
I first met Lawrence in April 2023. He and Bob Benson listed in the cycling room at the YMCA in Stanwood a social cycling group. I never rode with a group and after spending the winter in Tucson I was inspired to cycle a multi-day cycling event. I knew I needed group cycling experience in order to participate in my goal. (I had only briefly riden recreationally occasionally and at most 30 miles). I had heard of his name and was excited to meet up with him. Immediately I took a liking to him and asked him to train me. He said he was retired and didn't Coach any longer. I pleaded with him and that was the start of a deep relationship we fostered. Within a week I did my first cycling event; Camano Island's 30 mile McKlinchy mile. I never knew what I got myself into! But I worked hard with Coach Lawrence's guidance, support and encouragement. That fall I participated in Tucson's metric mile Tour de Tucson and joined my first official cycling group; GABA, Greater Arizona Bicycle Association bike club. I went on in 2024 completing 2 metric century ride events and 4 century rides (including STP, which I did because he really wanted me to undertake and I did not want to disappoint him). This year I completed also 2 metric century rides and 4 century rides (again STP ride and my first century ride in Tour de Tucson). Last year I put in over 6200 miles and I've already surpassed that mileage by several hundred miles. Next year I will stay the course with the same events including a honor ride for Lawrence, my third STP and a second Tour de Tucson.
He taught me a treasury of wealth in information and showed support in so many countless ways. I sent him my cycling data and status which he supported and had guidance of my training.
We shared 2 overnight rides ; Mt. Vernon WA to Blaine WA then to Vancouver BC and Yakima to Ellensburg. We were planning a self guided cycling trip to Portugal, which we were not able to do. He intended to spend this winter with me, making the journey by car with his bikes, gear and beloved dog "Elg", a Norwegian Elk Hound. He visited family along the way. We had plans to get the certification training with me to ride Tucson's worlds first aluminum built velodrome which just opened, and was working on my track bike he purchased in Portland Oregon.
Although his visit was short , I had the privilege to be apart of his journey from Camano Island to his final journey. His presence will be felt by many as well as by myself for a longtime. His legacy was his passion for cycling; his legacy is now carried forward to us all.
