San Juan Islands Mod Tour

Here is an opportunity for a bicycle tour of the San Juan Islands.  Two (2) pace groups to choose from, hotel stays, restaurant meals, and the option for gear delivery by car.  This mod ride will be co-ordinated and co-located with the steady ride.

Meeting Time & Location:

  • 12:00 noon, Sunday June 7th in Anacortes at a parking lot in the SE corner of Q Ave & 9th St
  • This meeting is for the pre-ride briefing and to transfer any of your gear you want to put into the SAG car, then we will proceed to the Anacortes ferry area.
  • Cars cannot be left at this location for the duration of the tour.
  • The Anacortes ferry area is expected to be too busy and crowded to find a meeting place.
  • We expect to return on Friday, June 12th on the 11;30 AM ferry arrival in Anacortes.

Register:

  • If this mod tour looks like your kind of fun, register as soon as possible and make your lodging reservations as soon as possible.
  • Group size for each of the mod group and steady group limited to 6 each (12 total) or lodging availability, whichever is less.

The plan:  Note: Ride With GPS routes will be provided later in an update.

  • Day 1 Sunday, June 7th:
    • Travel from home to the meeting location described above.  Those will do the whole trip by bike will move baggage to the car(s) going on the ferry.  
    • Bike riders who need to park their cars should drive to the Anacortes ferry area to find one of several pay lots to park their car, then ride their bike a 1/2 mile or so to the Anacortes ferry terminal to pay ferry fare to Lopez Island. 
    • Bike riders may also will ride 4 miles from the meeting area to the Anacortes ferry terminal to pay ferry fare to Lopez Island.  
    • No reservation required for bike riders.  ORCA card suggested.
    • Car drivers will drive to the Anacortes tool booth to pay ferry fare to Lopez Island.  Car reservations strongly suggested.
    • We’ll take the 1:55 PM ferry to Lopez Island then ride to Lopez Village for 3 nights.  A few lodging options are available.  The Lopez Islander Resort is suggested with king and double queen rooms on the ground floor and has a restaurant for dinner.  Breakfast and market options are an easy mile in Lopez Village.
  • Day 2 Monday, June 8th:  
    • Ride either moderate or steady routes around Lopez Island.  
    • The mod route is 35 miles with 2,106 feet of gain.  
    • The steady route will be shorter and easier.
  • Day 3 Tuesday, June 9th:
    • The mod group ride will load onto a car(s), take the 11 AM ferry to Orcas Island, drive to Eastsound, and ride to Mt Constitution and Olga.  28 miles and 3,608 feet of gain.  We might even hike up the tower on the top of Mt Constitution for a spectacular 360-degree view.  Return to Lopez Island via the 4:05 PM ferry.  
    • The steady group will do a different route on Lopez Island.
  • Day 4 Wednesday, June 10th:
    • Travel via bike / car / ferry to Friday Harbor for 2 nights.  
    • There are numerous lodging options around Friday Harbor.  
    • The Friday Harbor Suites is suggested and is known to have a variety of rooms on the ground floor and an elevator for 2nd floor rooms.  
    • Restaurants are about ½ mile in town.
  • Day 5 Thursday, June 11th:  
    • The mod ride is a 45-mile loop, 3,114 feet of gain, around San Juan Island with lots of stops including Roche Harbor, English Camp, American Camp, and Cattle Point.  
    • A couple of options could shorten and ease the mod ride.
    • The steady ride will be a shorter & easier ride about the island.
  • Day 6 Friday, June 12th:  
    • Travel via bike / car / ferry back to Anacortes and on to home.

Reservations:  The San Juan Islands are very popular, and everything will be booked soon.  Hotels and ferries for cars will require reservations.  No reservations required for bike travelers.

E-Bike Riders Read This:  E-bike riders and Ride Leaders should understand the BIKES Club e-bike policy.
