Friday Night at the Races

Ride leader: Paul Heydron, 425 344 1543, paulh.wa@comcast.net.

Enjoy a high steady/low moderate paced evening ride from Bothell Landing Park to the Jerry Baker Velodrome at Marymoor Park to watch the Friday night races.

Plan to be at the gravel parking lot at Bothell Landing Park by 6:00 PM on July 8th for a 6:15 PM roll out.  Note: park in the gravel lot, not in the paved parking lot by the bathrooms since we'll be back late and the parks department closes the paved lot.

The route is A terrain for a total of ~22 miles.  On the way down we will detour off the Sammamish River Trail and use the PSE and Central Redmond Connector trails to avoid the Redmond Derby Days 5k on the Sammamish Trail.  The planned route is: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40035377

The plan is to leave the velo around 9:00 PM and arrive back in Bothell around 9:45 PM (assuming no flats or other mechanicals).  You will need a headlight!  Assuming no delays, you can do the ride with a "see me" headlight, but parts of the trail are more comfortable and safer with a headlight you can see by.  I have a couple of spares if anyone needs one - let me know in advance.  You should also have a tail light.  Sunglasses may be good on the way down, but a problem on the way back.

For those that haven't been to the Friday night events at the velo, more information can be found here: Jerry Baker Velodrome.  There is no official entry fee, but they do suggest a $5 donation.  They take electronic payments, but cash is a lot easier.

You can plan to bring snacks or buy something there.  They usually have a couple of food trucks.  The plan on the 8th is Yummy Box and QT Food Truck.  It can be a bit of a wait at the food trucks.  There is a beer garden.

There are a few seating options.  There is a grandstand near the start/finish line that usually has space, but you have to leave your bike someplace else.  A lot of people (me included) prefer to sit along the rim on the south side of the velo where you can keep your bike with you.  If you want to do that I suggest a folding chair or a towel or blanket to sit on.  There are some stands on the east side but you end up looking straight into the setting sun.

Races are cancelled for rain, so the ride will be cancelled for rain.  Please check ride updates or contact me if in doubt.  Please also contact me with any other questions.
